Issue with Thai motorsports

It was interesting reading Motorsport recently (Motoring, Apr 25). The writer was quite right with his sentiments as I have the same with another branch of Thai motorsports and that is off-roading.

As a past participant in circuit racing and rallying, my main interest nowadays is off-roading. As a committee member of The Offroaders Federation of Thailand, I have often expressed the opinion that the main competitions in Thailand are quite frankly boring.

The figure of eight circuit used, for example with Off Road Trophy, is designed with one thing in mind: television. In no sense of the imagination is it true off-roading but a high-speed gymkana over rough ground.

Being a member of the International Press Reports Group comprising motorsport photo/journalists worldwide, we see proper off-roading at its best: The Rainforest Challenge, Croatia Trophy, Magam Trophy; the list is endless.

So what is the problem in Thailand? I can only suggest a lack of good marketing resulting in a reluctance from potential sponsors and inertia by personnel involved with Thai motorsports. I also believe the Press can play a role by writing more articles as you have done.

Natural gas Fortuner

I'm thinking of buying a Fortuner. But as Japanese diesel engines are quite dated in their evolution, noisy and a little on the dirty side, I would consider the 2.7 VVTi a better option. With 2WD and some TRD options, that should make a good choice.

Can you advise if such vehicle is able to be revamped to run on CNG and what positive/negative implications may incur. Main question: can the tank be placed in the place of the fifth wheel, for example, below the car and how would performance be affected, including gas consumption.

ANDRE J GRUNDMANN

Motoring replies :Running on CNG is attractive given its subsidised pump price. But installing such a system, together with the gas itself, adds some 100kg to the vehicle's rear-end which affects the vehicle's performance and driving characteristics unless suspension and brakes are upgraded. Also, the warranty will be void, unless you do the conversion after it expires.
