A visually intriguing evening of performances

The second programme at the 7th International Butoh Festival featured a stunning set of creators and performers with each of the three pieces varying greatly in terms of concept.

ZIME _ Zen of Interconnected ME, choreographed and performed by Simona Orinska with vocalisation by Skaidra Jancaite from Latvia, felt like a ritual replete with esoteric symbols and images of transformation and birth. A projected image of the moon panned across the floor, perhaps symbolising the passing of time. Jancaite, wearing a long red dress, emitted soft whispers and animalistic screeches while weaving around Orinska, a towering figure shrouded in white. As if the gasps and shrieks were pulling her into a trance, Orinska folded and coiled her body in response.

At one point Jancaite held a fake bird's head attached to a scroll bearing ancient Latvian signs between Orinska's legs. These ancient patterns reappeared as a fast-moving video projection on the floor, eventually forming a square which the performers traversed. Reaching the final stage of the ritual, Orinska slipped off her dress, fell to the floor and "unravelled" into darkness.
