Rare show of japanese woodblock prints

River City shopping complex is home to "Ukiyo-e: Japanese Special Art", an exhibition showcasing, for the first time in Thailand, a rare collection of ukiyo-e woodblock prints belonging to Michael Smith, a British collector of Asian artifacts.

Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints (or woodcuts) that first appeared early in the Edo period (1600~1868) and depicted stories set in places of entertainment after dark.

The art form was affordable because they could be mass-produced. They were mainly meant for townsmen, who were not wealthy enough to afford an original painting. The original subject of ukiyo-e was city life, in particular activities and scenes from entertainment districts.
