Rolling stone's origins revealed

UK transplant Lee Child has established himself as one of the top authors of thrillers in the US. Readers quickly took to his literary creation Jack Reacher, a tall ex-army major and military policeman. Single and not averse to a bit of dallying, Reacher is footloose and has taken to thumbing his way across the States. Along the way he solves crimes once local law enforcement reluctantly accept that he isn't the perpetrator.

THE AFFAIR: By Lee Child, 429 pp, 2011 Bantam paperback. Available at Asia Books and leading bookshops, 595 baht.

In the 15 previous books in the series, we weren't told why he and the military split. What sets The Affair apart is that Child decided to give his fans a break by backdating the protagonist's life to 1977, explaining why he shed his uniform then. His commanding officer in the Pentagon sent him to solve the murder of a woman in Mississippi ... undercover.
