A luminous documentary on the predicament of Thai farmers is still on show at The Emporium

The old buffalo, it would seem, is as stubborn as a yellow-shirted protester. Or as belligerent as his red-clad counterpart. Or both. Or maybe not, because the horned beast, after a few tugs, finally allows itself to be led across the fertile mud of an unploughed rice field, the solitary friend of local farmers in a place where the madness of pro- and anti-government camps in the capital is as sour as it is senseless.

Field of dreams: Agrarian Utopiais pointed and powerful because it was conceived as a poetry of light and mud.

The scene takes place in rural Chiang Rai, in a rice field toiled through sweat, tears and faith by men who do not own an inch of the land.
