Boxing clever

An insightful Thai documentary tells of poor, young muay thai practitioners trying to fight their way towards a brighter future

The ring comes only in one size. The boxers don't.

James is 12. A hot-headed Southern lad, small and taut like an electric wire, the Thai boy steps up on the canvas stage where he hopes to punch his way to glory. Rubbed-down and well-oiled, the tiny prizefighter fights, as he's trained to do, retreats, fights again, and loses. Suddenly the ring seems much larger, like the sea, and James swims back to shore bruised and battered.

"You called that boxing?," his trainer shot at him.
