Nader and Simin, a Separation

(Premiered Jan 19)

It's no surprise that Iranian film-maker Asghar Farhadi's drama took home the Golden Bear - the top prize - at the Berlin Film Festival in 2011. The morally complex story of a troubled marriage, told poignantly through the confines of Iran's strict code of customs, draws in viewers. Simin (Leila Hatami) wants to separate from her husband, Nader (Peyman Moaadi). However religion, ego and honour play a large role in the controversial events that ensue. Perhaps what makes the tale most interesting is that it focuses on some hush-hush topics. Definitely an engaging watch, audiences will see a moving story stemming from a more conservative side of Iran. Limited release at House Cinema, RCA.
