The Descendants

(Premiered Feb 16)

While mainstream blockbusters would have us believe that being a hero means saving the world from aliens or adored because you're a vampire that's too pale, sometimes it's nice to be reminded that bravery is found in everyday life. The poignant story of a husband and father forced to re-examine his life centres on Matt King (George Clooney), a workaholic lawyer trying to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife falls into an irreversible coma. Semi-delinquent, rebellious 17-year-old Alex (Shailene Woodley) and younger potty-mouthed Scottie (Amara Miller) almost steal the limelight from Clooney's thoughtful portrayal of a man attempting to navigate the vulnerable complexities of that social unit we call the family. Directed by Alexander Payne. Limited release at SF World Cinemas, SFX Emporium and Apex Siam Square.
