Cinema picnic with a historic film
13/02/2012 : A St Valentine's Day film screening cannot be more historic than this. Tomorrow on the lawn of Museum Siam, the French-Thai Cultural Festival, or La Fete, will treat singles and lovers to the Thailand premiere of a restored and coloured version of the 1902 film by Georges Melies,Voyage dans la lune (A Trip to the Moon). This colour print of the legendary film had been thought to have lost forever, but in 1993, the Barcelona Film Archive miraculously unearthed it, though in a sorry condition, and one of the most ambitious restoration in film history began.

Rooftop film fest in Pattaya
30/01/2012 : January has been a great month for cine buffs in Thailand with two international film festivals, one in Bangkok and another in Hua Hin to entertain the public, and with the curtain down on both events it is Pattaya's turn to step into the spotlight.

PREVIEW
Raiders of the archives
27/01/2012 : A rich trove of archival treasures, footage collages, rare moving image intrigues and post-post-avant-gardism experiments is ready for an onslaught beginning tomorrow at the 6th Bangkok Experimental Film Festival (BEFF 6). Under the theme "Raiding the Archives", BEFF 6 continues the spirit (bordering on cinematic spiritualism) of experimental cinema as a form of cultural and artistic investigation, this time with the emphasis on the relationship between moving images and our perception and interpretation of history.

MOVIE REVIEW
Disappointing crop
27/01/2012 : Starring Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes. Directed by Pedro Almodovar. In Spanish with Thai and English subtitles. At selected cinemas.

QUEER EYE
Daring to speak its name
26/01/2012 : Shortly after we embraced the arrival of 2012 there was good tidings for the LGBT community when several local newspapers broke the story of two gay men from the South who found each other through Facebook and went on to solemnise their relationship by hosting a traditional wedding, which was attended by both sets of parents. Since same-sex marriage is not legal in Thailand, all the guys gained from the ceremony was a happy memory and recognition of the union by their nearest and dearest.

Cash cow at ATM
26/01/2012 : Only three weeks into 2012 and we've already had the first Thai blockbuster movie: The romantic comedy ATM: Err Rak Error raked in nearly 60 million baht after six days since it opened last week, and studio GTH was so pleased and so confident at the film's box-office power that it threw a party to celebrate the 100-million revenue mark yesterday.

Parallel ambitions
25/01/2012 : We wish them the best of luck, and we pray Hua Hin International Film Festival won't turn out to be a lemon. A month ago hardly anybody had heard about this brand-new event, and now those who've heard about it are wondering if they'll take the trouble of making a trip down to the seaside town to watch the films. Our advise is, if the sky is blue and you have nothing else to do (and if you want to forsake the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival that will also happen this weekend) just go for the fun of it. Worst case, you can always decamp to the beach, or one of the seafood joints in Khao Takieb.

Screening of old films at BACC
25/01/2012 : The Thai Film Archive organises a screening every Tues, Wed and Thurs at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), with a mix of both old and new Thai films, as well as a programme of international cinema. The screening is free and takes place in the screening room on the 4th floor. With this temporary auditorium located at the convenient location right in the heart of Pathumwan district, the Film Archive can now deflect some of the complaints its headquarters in Salaya (which has a much better screening environment, though) received for being too far and too inconvenient, especially for movie fans who do not drive.

Rock-Solid Hollywood star
25/01/2012 : Last year in the hyperkinetic film Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson growled and grumbled playing the role of a federal agent chasing a pack of auto-bandits in Rio de Janeiro. Johnson, also known as The Rock, is a prime cut of beef that glitters in the Brazilian sun; yet the man holds his character with gravity, zipping through the breakneck action with all scowl and no smile.
Nominees in main Oscars categories
24/01/2012 : Here are the nominees in the main categories for this year's Oscars, to be handed out at the climax of Hollywood's annual awards season on February 26.

Bela in Bangkok
24/01/2012 : Like a cool uncle, Hungarian auteur Bela Tarr breezed into Bangkok this weekend without much fanfare and managed to blow the audience away with his film The Turin Horse. Tarr is one of the world's most visionary film-makers, a great formalist who sculpted his hypnotic cinema through long takes and lateral tracking. In town to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 9th World Film Festival (in addition to so many Lifetime trophies he has received in the past year) the director, a soft-spoken titan of European cinema, also answered questions after the screening of The Turin Horse on Sunday at Esplanade Cineplex.
