'Swan Lake' for the 21st Century
Expect a different version of the ballet classic at the Thailand Cultural Centre
Even the name Swan Lake conjures up the most archetypal visions of classical ballet: the preening ballerinas, the gliding swans and the pirouetting prince. It is the world's most renowned and beloved ballet.
Expect quite a different version, with many contemporary twists, moves and costumes when Zurich Ballet restages this classic at the Thailand Cultural Centre September 22 and 23 during Bangkok's 12th International Festival of Music and Dance.
The company's 2005 performance of Swan Lake marked the first time it had been performed at the Zurich Opera House in 30 years, as well as the start of a renaissance for the company. That performance exposed the prodigious gifts of its choreographer and artistic director Heinz Spoerli for storytelling and putting a new stamp on an old classic. It also revealed a troupe of dexterous and technically dazzling performers in fine form.
