Dreambox triumphantly pursued another dream-come-true project with its new musical, Namsai Jaijing, in which long-term companionship and youthful happiness are the name of the game. Thanks to a cast of young aspiring talents, quality musical numbers and efficiently practical set designs, this nostalgic show gives rise to feel-good memories of years past.
Based on Vor Vinitchaikul's beloved novel Namsai Jaijin (Purity and Sincerity), the musical highlights the virtues of friendship and happy moments as it time-capsules us back to the late 1960s when the first generation of Silpakorn university students stepped onto Tub Kaew campus, a new yet provincial place located at Sanam Chandra Palace, which then resembled "a cemetery" rather than an ideal university site _ as the opening song describes it.
Through three hours of this three-act production, it was obvious that it was a faithful adaptation of the literature. It recounted the story and presented the characters in a linear fashion, featuring routine romances and daily-life activities _ without any significant conflicts or complexities. While Act 1 focused on giving the background of each character and setting the tone of the story, more action and characterisation emerged in Act 2, before gradually winding down in Act 3. The finale, featuring the graduation day, was when emotion reached its peak, and some audience members left M-theatre with brimming eyes.
