It's that time of year when Bangkok residents are happier to be stuck inside the Thailand Cultural Centre than outside in the heavy rain and gridlock traffic. Today until October 24, 'Bangkok's 12th International Festival of Dance & Music' kicks off with Prince Igor, by Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre from Russia. Prince Igor is a vivid Russian opera with marvellous characters and high drama set in 1185 against the colourful background of Prince Igor's campaign against invading Polovtsian tribes. The Russian Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra will feature Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1 Classical, Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 Choral and La Boheme. From Spain is Sangre Flamenco, where 11 dancers of the company will be on stage to perform duets and solos _ both masculine and feminine _ as well as bulerias, tangos, zapateados, jaleos and martinets. The enchanting story of the most famous ballet, Swan Lake, by the Zurich Ballet from Switzerland, also returns to Bangkok theatre. Jazz bands from Sweden and Canada also join the stage in Jazz Evening: Part 1: Swedish Jazz Kings featuring Roy Williams of Sweden; and Part 2: Shuffle Demons from Canada. Zubin Mehta also returns to close the festival with his Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring and Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 1 with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
