Living legend, Zubin Mehta

Hypnotised and enthralled by a maestro

For over a month, Bangkok's art and music lovers have been spoiled by many great performances by artists and groups from different countries around the world. Bangkok's 12th International Festival of Dance & Music ended with its final performance on October 24, and although it was an official long weekend holiday, the Main Hall of the Thailand Cultural Centre was packed.

The luminary of today's classical music platform, Zubin Mehta, together with Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, of which the maestro has been appointed as their lifetime music director for more than three decades, brought their successful flamboyant, vigorous and powerful performance to Bangkok.

Both major repertoires chosen to end the festival had their own historical importance. The notorious and an inauspicious debut performance at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris on May 29, 1913 made Igor Stravinsky's ballet suite, The Rite of Spring such an influential composition, and a milestone in the history of music; and Stravinsky's masterpiece has impacted the musical world ever since.
