When I first left the States for the Lands of the Morning Calm and the Rising Sun, Harry Truman occupied the Oval Office. When next I left, filling passports with entry and exit stamps to 51 countries, Dwight Eisenhower was Chief Executive. Ultimately, I settled down in the Land of Smiles. Though a number of still-living expats have been here longer, I'm an old Thailand hand twice over.
I'm giving this chronology because in his thumbnail sketch background, Canuck author Christopher G Moore notes that he was in the UK, US and Japan before moving to Thailand in 1985, two decades after I did. And, unlike yours truly, he mastered the language. Still, my knowledge of local mores and insight to the Thai mindset is second to none.
