Weekend of jazz beckons

For the fourth year running, Mahidol University's College of Music is hosting the Thailand International Jazz Conference in the verdant, open-air setting of Suan Phrueksa Duriyang, from Friday to Sun, Jan 29.

"The event will give participants both happiness and knowledge," said Sugree Charoensook, dean of the College of Music, adding that he expected this year's gathering to be "the most perfect" to date.

It will be divided into three parts: jazz concerts, jazz workshops given by experienced musos and a competition for solo jazz performers. Among the foreign artists invited to play are three musicians from the birthplace of jazz, the United States: Benny Green, one of the world's top jazz pianists; Marcus Strickland, the New York-based saxophonist; and California trumpeter David Hart. They will share time on stage with talented pianist Taylor Eigsti and leading saxophonist Robert Knop.
