Casting a brief glance at his classmates, Chaiyarin Banjongtad begins moving confidently to the vibrant rhythms of live music played by a pi phat (traditional Thai orchestra) ensemble.
The boy has been cast in the important role of Lakshmana and he and other young pupils from Satit Prasarnmit Demonstration School (Primary) are rehearsing for an upcoming khon (masked dance-drama) performance called Ram Chakri Maharaj. It incorporates several chapters from the Ramakien, the Thai version of India's Ramayana epic, and is being staged next weekend for the school's annual show.
The performance involves some 150 students from grades 4 to 6, between the ages of 10 and 12, said Assoc Prof Trairat Pipatpokkapole, director of the Centre for Thai Wisdom on the Ramakien.
