Pete Townshend cracked a few guitars. Devo cracked the whip. Now 34 artists from Europe and Southeast Asia are preparing to crack the bamboo.
The ‘Cracking Bamboo’ concerts will take place on Sept 30 and Oct 5 at 7pm at Mahidol University’s College of Music.
The Goethe Institute Thailand is putting on the third European-Asian percussion event "Cracking Bamboo".
The artists will perform solo in their first performance on Sept 30 and again as an ensemble on Oct 5. Each concert will be at 7pm at the College of Music, Mahidol University.
As well as the concerts, the Cracking Bamboo festival will take place from Sept 30-Oct 4. The festival offers a platform for playful dialogue between artist with modern instruments from Europe and traditional instruments from Southeast Asia. Participating in the festival will be artists from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
The five-day event will feature a series of academic seminars and collective workshop sessions conducted by numerous tutors. They include tuba player Klaus Burger, electronic performer Mathias Schneider-Hollek, flautist Robert Aitken, Mongolian singer Samdandamba Badamkhorol, South Korean performance artist Young-ja Bang-cho and voice artist Franoise Vanhecke.
The group will later continue their journey to give concerts in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Oct 6 and Oct 10, respectively.
The festival began in 2008 with more than 40 musicians. The first two festivals were considered great successes.
