Former
Chart Pattana Party secretary-general Pavena Hongsakula yesterday
launched her election campaign in the running for Bangkok governor,
with her main policy aimed at eradicating crime from the capital.
Ms Pavena said ''24-hour safety for Bangkok'' was the first policy
of her ''Bright, Convenient, Clean and Safe'' election campaign.
She said implementation of the policy would require cooperation from
taxi and tuk-tuk drivers, as well as taxi-motorcyclists, who would
be encouraged to report suspicious activities directly to city hall.
A radio frequency would be allocated to support the scheme, she said.
In return for their cooperation, the drivers and motorcyclists would
receive free medical check-ups, she added.
Ms Pavena said she expected to name her prospective deputies on June
26 _ the first day of candidacy registration for the election _ and
unveil the remainder of her policies by early July.
The election was scheduled to be held on Aug 29.
Chart Pattana Party leader Suwat Liptapanlop congratulated Ms Pavena
at the opening of her campaign office, near Lak Si.
Addressing about 300 of her supporters, he said the Chart Pattana
had lost one of its best members to the people of Bangkok.
Ms Pavena was running in the election as an independent candidate
after leaving her party post recently to vie for the governorship.
Mr Suwat said it was time for the city to have a woman in charge.
''Running the city administration is the same as running a family,''
he said. ''A woman is more suitable for the job.''
