An overwhelming number of Bangkokians do not wish
to see Bangkok governor Samak Sundaravej seek re-election in the
upcoming gubernatorial poll, the Suan Dusit Poll has found.
The survey said 74.19% of the respondents did not want Mr Samak
to seek another term in office, saying the governor lacked clear
achievements and had failed to solve Bangkok's problems and that
voters deserve a fresh face to lead city hall.
Only 22.65% thought Mr Samak should be given a second chance because
he was a dedicated governor.
As many as 54.78% made it clear they would not vote for Mr Samak.
Only 13.45% said they would definitely cast their ballots for him,
30.69% were undecided.
It was found that 56.86% were dissatisfied with Mr Samak's overall
performance, saying he had failed to deliver on his promises. On
the contrary, 38.72% said they were pleased he was at the city's
helm partly because he was able to keep Bangkok clean and orderly.
Bangkok residents were most impressed with Mr Samak's regulating
of street vendors (14.26%), his garbage collection policy (13.22%),
making the city look more clean (8.62%), and alleviation of traffic
woes (6.54%).
The survey revealed that 46.75% were disappointed with Mr Samak's
inability to straighten out Bangkok's problems and also his refusal
to listen to other people's views. Those not disappointed, a 43.77%,
said Mr Samak fared rather well. They are not expecting too much
from a new face.
