Privatisation
critic Wuthipong joins race for top job
Wuthipong Priabjariyawat, an independent scholar and
staunch opponent of privatisation, yesterday officially announced
his intention to run in the Aug 29 Bangkok governor election.
Speaking in front of supporters, including well-known
social critic Dr Prawase Wasi and Bangkok senator Sophon Suphapong,
Mr Wuthipong said he decided to run for the city's top administration
post because he was tired of politicians failing to take into account
advice given by outsiders.
Mr Wuthipong was confident his experience as executive
of the Thai Rating and Information Services Co and Bangkok Bank,
and his past handling of national-level policies, would enable him
to effectively take the helm of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration
(BMA). He believed he would be able to apply that work experience
to Bangkok and vowed to make public participation the key to his
success.
Saying he would not spend much money on his campaign,
Mr Wuthipong said he wanted to prove that political success does
not require riches and that principles can prevail over wealth.
He also vowed to keep the city administration out
of money-spinning businesses such as casinos and commercial centres
which require the BMA to close down public parks.
As a staunch opponent of privatisation, Mr Wuthipong
said he would preserve and maintain national property.
Narong Chokwattana, a supporter of Mr Wuthipong, said
he was glad to see many followers of Maj-Gen Chamlong Srimuang join
the race because they are all good people.
