Democrats surprised, demand explanation
The Democrat party is demanding the
army explain why it banned a news spot by its candidate for Bangkok
governor, Apirak Kosayodhin, from radio stations it operates.
Democrat deputy leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday the party
had contracts with several air-time concessionaires on various radio
stations to broadcast Mr Apirak's 30-second spot.
The contracts include running it on army stations during hourly news
programmes
However, the army banned the hourly spot one day after it was first
aired, he said. The only explanation to the concessionaires was that
the ban was temporary.
``It never gives the reason,'' said Mr Abhisit, who heads the Democrat
city election centre.
He said the ban affected Mr Apirak's election campaign and came as
a surprise.
The air-time had been contracted legally and the content explained
Mr Apirak's policies as a candidate for Bangkok governor. There was
nothing illegal and nothing that would damage any other party.
Mr Abhisit demanded quick clarification from the army and said other
radio stations were airing the spot without any problem.
