Pongsapat cleared by poll watchdog

MONGKOL BANGPRAPA

Police spokesman Pongsapat Pongcharoen did not breach the rules by declaring he would serve as deputy Bangkok governor under Pavena Hongsakul if she wins the Aug 29 poll, the Election Commission says.

Pol Maj Gen Pongsapat sought clarification from EC chairman Wassana Permlarp yesterday. It was confirmed he could be named as a member of her team while still in the government service. Pol Maj Gen Pongsapat, deputy commissioner of the immigration, said he was advised his impartiality could be questioned if he took part in the election campaign while still a state official.

He is still awaiting royal endorsement of his promotion to the rank of police lieutenant-general.
