Tour by Thaksin delegation improper

Democrat party leader Banyat Bantadtan has challenged
the Election Commission to take Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra
to task for making a traffic inspection tour in Bangkok with Pol Maj-Gen
Pongsaphat Pongcharoen.
The police major-general was on the election team of Bangkok governor
candidate Pavena Hongsakula and would have become a deputy governor
had she won.
``I think [Mr Thaksin's] public appearance in such company is tantamount
to favouritism, and not simply untimely,'' Mr Banyat said.
``I urge the commission, having shown its strict adherence to the
law by axing Leena Jangjanya, to regard this as favouritism and thus
illegal,'' he said, referring to red-carded candidate Mrs Leena.
Mr Banyat said Mr Thaksin's tour on Saturday, on the eve of the Bangkok
governor election, was untimely and could have affected the election
results. He said the tour could have directly affected the results
because the person elected governor would play an important role in
solving traffic problems.
However, the Democrat leader said, the prime minister seemed to be
implying that only central government traffic solutions would work.
Referring to Pol Maj-Gen Pongsaphat, Mr Banyat said it was improper
for Mr Thaksin's delegation to be accompanied by someone who had already
announced he would be deputy governor for a candidate who hopes to
supervise traffic-related issues.
