Note on BKK Intl Film Fest
The date is Sept 24 to 30, 2009. The theme, outlandishly, is "Hollywood Glamour". The Bangkok International Film Festival, much maligned by the press since 2004, bounced back to become a fairly respectable movie event last year under the leadership of Thai Directors' Assoc and Federation of National Film Assoc. This year, the management structure remains largely the same, with the Tourism board rolling out financial backup.
What the festival did well in 2008 was to put the emphasis back on the quality of the movies, and I'm sure that aspect will keep Bangkok cinephiles happy, more or less, in the upcoming edition of the fest. But what's incurable to the organizers (at least their administrative wing) is the chronic fantasy to achieve the kind of "glamour" they subsrcibe to probably after watching a live broadcast of the Oscar. So, as usual, the festival will invest unduly time and effort to fly in "stars" -- though to be completely honest, the fest only succeeded in shepherding in forgotten celebs, if not totally washed-out ones, and their appearances sometimes elicted more sniggers than excitement from the press.
I'm not sure if the theme "Hollywood Glamour" is a practical joke so subtly camouflaged under the earnest of intention. I'll certainly write more on the subject of the BKK IFF, but the most obvious thing to me, now, is that the festival has shown such great potential as a central movie event in Southeast Asia (thanks to the Thai programming team), and it'll gain even more respect should it decide to cut back on the fanatism about "stars".Hello
