I cannot resist to agree with comment 20 and lead me to write. I would repeat reading again.

It is the core of every problem created and maintained by uniform idiots that has deep root connection from greedy elite root. Other than that the school system is just the subsequent effects. Leave teacher alone they have to do what those idiots asked them to do.

About Thai children is okay. Unless K.Thaksin comes back, they will stay there.
What about the Thai adults?
Let me talk about them. What about their IQ level?. I have long observed common behavior of the adults. Let's say they are in 40th to 60th of age. This generation was provided with proper education service either in city or in the ruralities. I found only 50% entered in primary school and graduated the 4 years' course and out of them only 50% entered into high schools and 50% of them graduate. What about college or university? They graduate can hardly understand basic calculus.
If anyone think he or she got a bechelor degree, try to solve this question, a chain of numbers.

Thank you Sanitsuda for another excellent article for informing the public about important issues. As a retired teacher I can appreciate the expressions here by other teachers, rants and otherwise. Still, your article gave me an avenue (via Google translate) to better explain my shared views to my adopted family. Our daughter reading in Thai to my wife. It is an approach to share topical ideas in greater complexity than my 2.6 years of Thai linguistics allows.

For those inclined to quickly pardon the business folk for providing unhealthy food in bulk, I only wish everyone would find and see the movie FOOD, Inc. which shows the extent of the problem as it has reached in the USA. I only hope (but doubt) that the Thai authorities will help this wonderfully fruitful country avoid the pitfalls of Agribusiness and food supply.

The debate in this comments section swerves between junk food and junk education, and both of these are genuine issues and neither will be addressed by a Thai government which has grown fat and lazy dispensing both to children who deserve more. Yes, it's shameful, yes, it's damaging and stupid and unnecessary and avoidable, but NO - nothing will be done. because the so-called "decisions" are made by office workers in military uniform much more concerned with securing themselves another bank loan and ordering the lates model HiLux SUV than improving the lot of the Thai people.
This - government - is the cause of both junk food and junk education, not western influence or "lack of access".
You're giving this generation junk. You're giving the next generation junk. Look around you - you get out what you put in.
Yes, this is a rant - there are times when strong language and feelings have to be expressed, even though it seems un-Thai. But I see a country on a down spiral, and ranting is all I can do. This is the country I love. I can't vote here, I have no rights here, I've given it way more money than I can ever hope to see repaid, and I am furious at the ineptness, the cowardice, the lack of imagination and leadership and intelligence shown by the government at every level. It's YOUR children who are suffering, Thailand, and their children after them. Don't put the blame anywhere but where it resides, in your own lamentable lack of self-government.
