Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva planned to visit the restive South on the weekend for the first time since he took office last month, Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senneam said Tuesday.

Mr Abhisit will make one-day visit to the region on Saturday, Mr Thaworn said.

The announcement came as the cabinet approved on Tuesday an extension of the enforcement of the emergency decree for the three southernmost provinces for another three months.

It would be the 14th time the decree has been extended.

The extension will be effective from Jan 20 to April 19.
