Kobsak won't oppose Suparat's dismissal

Deputy Prime Minister overseeing economic matters Kobsak Sabhavasu on Thursday said he would not oppose Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij if he decides to dismiss Permanent Secretary for Finance Suparat Kawatkul after the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) ruled him of appointing four Revenue Department deputy director generals unlawfully.

Mr Kobsak said the government's economic duties would not be disrupted if Mr Suparat is discharged because it is only a single position.

The law also requires Mr Kobsak to be dismissed within 30 days and the Finance Ministry has to inform the NACC within 15 days following the ruling.

Finance Minister Korn said he will forward Mr Suparat's case to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for consideration .

The minister said the case is beyond his responsibility and he has to pay respect to Mr Suparat, who is a senior government official.

"Mr Suparat is a high-ranking official and if there is an opportunity, he can return to work for the country again," said Mr Korn.

The offences took place in 2001 and the permanent secretary should be given a chance to prove himself because he has done many good things for the country, but the NACC's ruling has to be respected as well, the finance minister added.
