The Phra Khanong provincial court sentenced Kanpithak Patchimsawat - son of a former Miss Thailand beauty queen - to 10 years and one month in jail for ramming his Mercedes into a crowd at a bus stop in 2007, killing a woman and injuring several others.

The sentence was reduced from 15 years and two months, because Mr Kanpithak's family has already given compensation to some of the victims.

The court ordered him to pay 2 million baht for relatives of the dead woman, and 800,000 baht for two people who were seriously injured that night.

Mr Kanpithak or Moo Ham, 21, is the son of the former Miss Thailand, Sawinee and Kan-anek Patchimsawat, and a nephew of retired deputy police chief Ukrit Patchimsawat.

Mr Kanpithak was also accused of smashing a rock in the face of bus driver Sathaporn Arunsiri near Sukhumvit Soi 26, after his Merdeces was involved in a minor incident with the bus.

Mr Kanpithak's father Kan-anek offered to pay Mr Sathaporn 50,000 baht in compensation, who agreed to take the offer.

About five years ago, my husband used to take tae kwon do classes with Ham (the nickname he used at the TKD school) and with Ham's mum (yes, she studied TKD also). Anyway one day everyone was sparring in pairs, and Ham's mum lost a round to the young NIST student she had been sparring against. So what? That happens. Sometimes you win a round, sometimes you lose a round. Well, Ham went berserk and started yelling at this poor NIST kid, shouting into his face and threatening him, basically demanding how DARE he spar against his mother like that?! The whole class fell silent, thinking, What the hell is going on here? Where did this anger come from? Soon a teacher stepped in and took control of the situation, and Ham settled down. Little did his classmates know what his anger was truly capable of...

As soon as things cool down and the attention is focused elsewhere - he'll be quietly released. The Bangkok Post has a utterly dismal record of keeping tabs on who should be serving their time and checking up on them afterwards.

As for the judge, it's disgusting that he/she reduced the sentence by five years or 30% solely based on the parent's hand-outs to the victims' families. It just amounts to buying a significant reduction in the sentence; the money factor (suppress laughter) should never have been considered because a poor person would not have the same opportunity. Furthermore, their son was not the least bit sorry for what he did.

However, some may be comforted by the highly likely scenario that "Moo" be the playtoy of some fat old "mafia" figure while serving his time.

""There is no solid evidence to back up the defendant's claim that his mentalhealth problem led him into this violent action," the court said yesterday, "The defendant comฌmitted the crimes because he has been spoiled".

Right, daddy Kananek, YOU are a culprit as well.

Upon hearing the verdict, Kananek said his son would appeal against the verdict. Currently, the young man has already been released on Bt5 million bail.

"My son is totally repentant," the father said, adding that his family had already paid a lot of compensation to the victims in the case.

I know your older brother Ukrit, I am sure he is not impressed with the way you brought up your offspring.

It is not unusual for a higher court to increase the penalty.

Just to remember who Kananek is: "Sathaporn also told police that a man, who identified himself as the father of the car's driver, threatened to harm his wife and children. "He said he knew many senior police and military officers. The threat was made in front of police officers. I am scared," Sathaporn said.

a joke- he should have got life or the death penalty
it was premeditated cold blooded murder by a hot headed piece of trash
Abhisit should order the Duangchalerm murder case reopened so that he can keep the pig company in jail and throw chalerm in jail for his master minding the cover up and bribing of the judge and intimidating the many eye witnesses
