Thailand 'cannot care' for Rohingya

  • Published: 31/01/2009 at 09:44 PM
  • Online news:

Defence Ministry permanent secretary Gen Aphichart Penkitti said on Saturday that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had used World Economic Forum in Davos to clarify to the international community about Rohingya problems and Thailand’s position was now better understood.

Gen Aphichart said  Rohingya migrants had used Thailand as a conduit to a better life in a third country. About the human rights issue, Article 257 of the Constitution states that Human Rights Commission would do as much as possible to observe human rights, but must regard the country and people’s interests as paramount rather than trying to find faults with security officers.

He said that Rohingya came into the country illegally and Thai security personnel must do their duty by pushing them out of Thai territory as the country could not take care of them.

If the UNHCR regards all Rohingya migrants as refugees, the UN body must specify a certain area to take care of them before sending them to third countries as Thailand insisted all along that Rohingya were illegal migrants.

UNHCR should solve the problem at the source by consulting with Burma, rather than  trying to find faults with Thailand, said Gen Aphichart.

This is clearly an international criminal act that needs to be fully prosecuted at International Criminal Court. Putting them out to see, without engine, without enough food, without chance of survival is deliberate and premediated murder. A case should be filed at ICC, which I believe has jurisdiction for this case.

I think you should fix the problem at the source, not at the end!
Go and talk to Myanmar or Bangladesh.

    To comment # 18

Thailand was never colonised ? Oh really ? What about the Japanese in WW2 ? Who was running Ayutthaya in 1800s ? Where does the Thai alphabet and language come from ? Who was ruling most of modern Thailand 400y ago ? What does Siam Reap mean ?

Thank you for proving my point of Thais thinking of themselves as the Master Race in this region.
You reek of the very arrogance, xenofobia and racism this society is infested with.

Just because I'm not Thai, I'm not less of a person. I have the right to my opinion about Thailand just like everyone else has. What I can't do is vote or be part of the politics here. That is perfectly acceptable and fair.

I follow the laws and rules set by Thai government and I have every right to live here as long as I continue to do so.

Not you or anyone else can tell me I have no right to my opinion because I'm not Thai. We are all human beings and as such we have equal rights. Much to the displeasure of you and your fellow Thais.

If you can't stand criticism, just close the borders and kick all non-thais out. Seize all foreign trade and see how you are doing in 5 years time with no contact to those disgusting foreigners.

I'd be more than happy to see that happening.

To all those foreigners who are always complaining, criticizing and whining about the Thai gov. on almost every topic. Why don't they just look at the mirror themselves and ask themselves just how 'Good' their own country is govern? These foreigners are nothing but a pain in the A*se.If you've got nothing better to appreciate this country,I suggest the best thing is to pack up and leave(for good)!Remember,Thailand has never been colonized and never will.We can handle any situation given and certainly we don't need your stupid and boring negative comments.

    What do you think??

It is surprising to see people dealing totally differently to different classes of people. It is true that Thai history teach you how to hate or condemn Burmese people. But one thhing i want to tell you is that (if you did not know) history is only the source where we can know how have been brought up, how the social, culture and economics have been evolved and how to build better life taking the ground from the past. It is not the source to learn how to hate people.

If you really think about history and wars in the past, how much many countries around the world would hate British, Germany, france and Japan. The whole world knows how they invaded the land of others, How they built powers, how they dealth with and many things to say.
But when you think about the social and economic development, you can not survive with this standard of moral, whatever you think yourself are.
When you say you are good, the people around you also need to see you as good. Self recommendation is not a recommendation.

Further more, when talking about economic development, you also need to have different labors. Most of the Thai think they are good and superior to their neigbours and what Mr Abhisit is doing is to clear out the illegal migrants and give the low jobs to the Thai which have been undertaken by the illegal migrants wiht very low pay.
It is true that no country around the round would wants to have illegal migrants. but good countries are happy to give a hand to the people in trouble. Any helpful hand will not end in vain.

Can Mr Abhisit upgrade the morale of his people by putting them back to inferior level in stead of promoting them.
The illegal migrants have helped alot Thai economics and social developments too in a way that as they are desperate, they are willing to do how ever low the job is which is disgusting for the Thai. By using them, the Thai employers can cut alot of labor cost and make more profit and pay more tax too and when this low jobs are done by these less fortunate people, the Thai have more chance and motivation to train or attempt for better job which will better enshrine their future lives.
Lets say, you want only people with money and talents to come to your country?
Then, what will be the consequences? The powerful buiness for your country will be controled by foreigners with money and your Thai people will have to do the jobs that foreigners don't want to do because they are more skilled and talented than your Thais. It should not be the way to upgrade your people.
With all these points of advantages to the country, Mr Abhisit's resolution to clear out the illegal migrant could be a mistake.

Of course, everything comes with Pros and cons.

Amazing Thailand, your comments are spot on. Thais are ruthless, heartless money-grubbing bastards at their core. The only smiles you see in Thailand happen when YOUR money is passing into THEIR hands. As for human rights, you are correct. Thais don't understand or value the plight of refugees so they have no problem murdering refugees. It's sickening. But why do you think they call ALL Westerners "falang?" It's all about dehumanizing and demonizing their perceived enemies, which are ALL people who are not Thai.

I side with thailand on this issue.

if they are illegal, they have no business being in thailand. every country has this policy. even burma.

hey! I got an idea. give them a meal, and then send these muslims over to malaysia or indonesia.

I'm sure they will take care of their muslim brothers with open arms.

Boy what a difference we see with the display of Human Rights now that the Democrats are in power. Before they were so concerned and the elite media along with the activist senators and they all rubbished Thailand Human Rights under the PPP. But now it is not the government faults that they have killed refugees it is the refugees fault and the activists elite media and business stay mute at the disgraceful deaths caused by the inapproriate policies of the government. Thailand you got what you wanted by removing the PPP but I will tell you by the end of 2009 you will not like what you have got.
