Energy Minister Wannarat Channukul said the Energy Policy and Planning Office on Thursday resolved to gradually increase the excise taxes on gasohol and diesel and as a result prices of gasohol, diesel and bio-diesel will move up by 0.60 baht a litre by midnight tonight.

This will lower the Oil Fund's spending from 125 million to 89 million baht per day, the minister said.

He said benzene prices are not adjusted because they have reached the tax ceiling limit.

The next increase will not be more than 1.50 baht a litre, as resolved by the Energy Policy and Planning Office, according to Mr Wannarat.

Previously, the government raised the excise taxes by 1.55 baht per litre on February 1.

He added that the country is expected to import around 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) a month this year.

Thailand (as do many other countries) pay for their oil in U.S. dollars-they are running out of foreign reserves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
However, it is the right thing to do, because Thai people share their cars less than Europeans or even U.S. citizens. Also, no one walks here, for whatever reason and however close the destination!
Living in Chiangmai, with terrible pavements and few, ignored crossings, PERHAPS I understand!

Interesting! the world oil prices is going down and instead of freezing the biodisel oil which makes better sense, the energy minister is increasing the price. Is this the way the government wants to support biodisel and lessen the burden of the people. Don't always think that those who can afford driving comes from affluent family. As long as the infrastructure and transportation service is not feasible for everyone coming from all parts of Bangkok, the government is RESPONSIBLE to make travelling cheap and easy. I will give a vote if the opposition wants to censure the energy minister on this issue.

It's just not comprehensible what is going on in the heads of those government guys. On one side they want to promote renewable fuels like ethanol and biodiesel. Mind you that the ethaonl and biodiesel programme was initiated by the democrats before Taksin's time. Now that the program is slowly taking shape and production of gasohol and biodiesel started to pick up last year they are going to destroy the program. Now the oil price is low, renewable fuels have a very hard time to compete and ethanol producers are struggling badly - and instead of helping the program they do the opposite and make renewable fuels even less competitive. My logic somehow works differently...

Well done to the democrats... You have done things totally different to all other goverments that have come before you...

In the midst of a depression and global recession, to help the economy you are RAISING the fuel price where previous governments have Lowered it...

Well done to move away from the naughty dealings of those evil "populist" governments that have come before you. Dr. T will be so proud of you.
