Officials back off herb listings

The Department of Agriculture chief Somchai Charnarongkul held a press conference Thursday to apologise public for causing confusion after the Industry Ministry listed 13 widely used herbal plants as hazardous substances.

Mr Somchai insisted that the announcement on listing the plants as "hazardous substances type 1" under the 1992 Hazardous Substances Act was aimed at controling the commercialisation of the plants.

Production of the plants for consumption in household or in local communities is not prohibited, he said.

The objective of the announcement is to prevent farmers from being fooled into buying products manufactured from the herbal plants that are sub-standard, he added.

He insisted that there is no motive behind the announcement, and that it is not meant to benefit any private or international companies.

He also said that he has proposed the hazardous substances committee to amend the announcement.

On Wednesday, organic farming advocates threatened to take the Industry Ministry to court if it refuses to revoke its decision to list the 13 herbs as hazardous plants. See earlier story here

The herbs include chili, lemon grass, turmeric, ginger and neem.

How's about government stops this nonsense and to get serious on regulating industrial toxic waste being released into our rivers, and restore our forests to their pristine condition?

One of the appointed minister by Abhisit is a former executive from the CP Group, don't you remember? And do you think he has nothing to do with this? CP's (Thanin) was caugth redhanded trying to buy his way for $50,000.00 to meet with former President Clinton.

All big companies in Thailand have high ranking officials, generals, bank executives sit on their boards because of their power, influence, and connection. I sat in a few of those Board of Directors meetings with a company well-known name in Bangkok on display everyday, and that what those people are for.

    Cui bono?

As in all things in Thailand, someone is profiting off this (or not profiting off this). Follow the money, someone isn't paying someone with gov't connections so they're shutting down the money train. Man how does any commerce get done in this banana republic?

Hey Voice, I distinctively remember you saying something to the affect that you would not lower yourself to insults... I guess your memory is about as sharp as your critical thinking skills. SO keep on dancing around the facts with your propaganda.

You've yet to explain away these two articles which clearly shows CP Group pretty much buys every politician that happens to be in office and sets them off to do their dirty work. So basically the UDD and Thaksin, and the PAD with the Democrats are all working for the same people.

Oh the other link, about Thaksin's PR odyssey, is really funny, especially for you Voice who claims these articles are rubbish and fake. You can go check the US House of Representatives lobbying register yourself and see Thaksin calling in favors from James Baker aka Carlyle Group partner, a total traitor and sell out to multi-nationals if I ever saw one.

Bottom line is if you are going to protest, go do it on your own. Don't go following a bunch of politicians or even anyone with political connections or conflicts of interest. PAD and UDD can be found next to the definition of "conflict of interest."

Keep treating me like a doddering old man Voice, I will feed you the rest of that leg attached to your foot you already stuck in your mouth.

Yes #13 that is my point exactly PAD and UDD are all working for the same big money. CP Group, Monsanto, the Trilateral Commission, Carlyle Group, and other multi-nationals, they are buying politicians on both sides of the aisle. PAD and UDD are being played off against each other, marginalizing real dissent to the benefit of everyone involved. The PAD didn't divulge Thaksin's true nature to the angry crowd because they indeed are working for the same paymasters as Thaksin.

And what other explanation could be given as to why the Democrats are seamlessly carrying on Thaksin's policies of selling the country out to foreign interests, and handling Thaksin with velvet gloves. Sure it looks mean in the press and there might be real rivalry taking place but I assure you all, they are all working for the same people, Red shirts/Yellow shirts even though most of them have absolutely no idea.

Cato, the reason that PAD is keeping Thaksin's 'Damning evidence" under their belt is that everyone of them could (and should) have the same charges brought against them.

I don't think the ekachai's article is well written. promotion of organic food products for forign markets is one of the garvernment policy, so the intention of MOI should not be so simple as she depicted.
