Airport train to open Aug 12

  • Online news:

The Airport Link from the Phaya Thai and Makkasan areas of downtown Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi airport is set to open for passengers on Aug 12, the birthday of Her Majesty the Queen, deputy Transport Minister Sopon Zarum said on Friday.

He conceded some facilities, including the baggage carousel system, would not be ready on the opening day, but he said he needed to speed up its launch.

The luggage-loading service at Makkasan station would not be operational, so there might be some inconvenience for passengers with heavy bags.

The construction of the 28-km route is 96 per cent complete. There have been delays to work at some stations and route sections due to hold-ups in land acquisitions, said SRT deputy governor Prasert Attanan.

The SRT plans to collect a fare of 150 baht from passengers taking non-stop trains while those travelling on trains that stop at every station will pay between 15 and 45 baht.

It's been 5 years since I was in Bangkok.....cant wait for next trip...what a great city / country with such nice friendly people. Hope you dont continue to damage your country with political problems.
A new airport, a new fast rail link...wow! I wish Melbourne had a train link.

3 years eh since the airport opened and they are opening the service, maybe, in August, while still planned to be not fully operational and functional. Greeeeat. Nothing to be proud in this "feat", is there. The construction has been delayed and ridden with problems from bad concrete to everything else. And while they are only now opening the train link, maybe (I wont believe it untill I see it as everyone knows the fate of the two additional stations at the end of Saphan Taksin), the airport has long since started to show the effects of wear and tear everywhere. From falling tiles in toilets to broken tiles on floors, clearly sign of inferior materials. The signs have been everywhere blacked out as they were printed with incorrect text etc. This airport definetly in no universe be competing with other Asian hubs. Shame on Thailand and being so lousy in constructing public facilities while strutting your stuff and beating your drum how you are the Next Big Hub along Hong Kong and Singapore etc....

    96% complete . . . and still requires 5 more months?

It's still a bit expensive compared to a taxi that will drop you off at the door. How much time does it take to go from the airport to PhayaThai?

Gosh, so many problems people have, why don't you just stay at home and avoid them all? The fact that things are different from what they are at home, does not mean they are bad. I use taxis every day in Bangkok, I go to airport every week, I find them generally fine! Maybe your attitude is the root of problem, not the taxi service?

Thanks for your insight Roy, unlike you I refrain from making any personal attacks. My opionion, and it is my opinion which you really have a choice to agree or disagree as part of your opinion. It was my findings when travelling to Manila and Jakarta for the past 7 years that the service there is certainly much worse than Bangkok.
As for generalising, I have found that the bad service is the rule and not the exception.

if u learn to speak thai you will reduce problems with taxis to a minimum.
its their country, learn their language, and it all gets easier.

the worst taxi drivers are in malaysia.

The sad part about this story is the second and third paragraphs:

''He conceded some facilities, including the baggage carousel system, would not be ready on the opening day, but he said he needed to speed up its launch.

The luggage-loading service at Makkasan station would not be operational, so there might be some inconvenience for passengers with heavy bags.''

So the saga of a rushed opening and an unready airport continues.
Ever been through Hong Kong's new airport? It's superb and everything was in place and fully working on opening day -- including the train.

you are right Steveyinasia, i agree with you that its more stressful in manila with most of the Taxi drivers, than here in Bangkok.I'm also one of the victim. most of them take advantage with the touristas. the airport accommodation in Bangkok is so convenient than in Manila. But always remember that not all Taxi drivers in manila are what you think... never generalize you fuckin idiot.there are still out there with the typical filipino hospitality that you can't find here in Bangkok.

Congrats to the the airport this link will be invaluable to airport commuters as well as people along Pattakarn and Rama 9 Hopefully the taxi mafia will disappear from lack of business and wont reappear at the end of the line in Pratunam .These guys give taxi drivers a bad name .
