A group of insurgents gunned down and beheaded a couple of local rubber farmers in the southern border province of Yala on Sunday morning.

The two victims, indentified as Kongphet Janyarerk and his wife Yenjai, were brutally killed by the gunmen while they were travelling to work at a rubber plantation in Yala's Raman district. The culprits decapitated them and took their heads away before escaping from the area.

Police and soldiers were inspecting the crime scene before tracking the assailants down.

In other developments in the restive South, authorities were able to arrest a member of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) group in Narathiwat province on Sunday after they were notified that a group of four to five perpetrators could be plotting to create unrest in the area.

The suspect was indentified as Mamahafi Yee-ngor, aged 39. He was detained for further interrogation and investigation.

    Apisit should declare the conflict in the South a reginal problem so he can keep doing nothing. Why not? Some of these terrorists come from Malaysia right? No Lookmoo we don't want to enlist again we already taught a class at CRMA to fulfill my military obligation(heavy sacasm). Only poor uneducated conscripts serve in the army under platoon leaders who are safely in the barrack (mild sacasm).
    No it must not be military solution only. Strategy with stick and carrot must be used.
    Why I see not one up-armored humvee or a flak vest on the soldier. No night visions or ambush team. Where the heck is the money being spent on? Where is the recon? Why are these terrorists not pursued relentlessly? WE can't be a sitting duck everyday. Killers must be tracked down. More protection must be given to the population. Don't just stand there do something. Enough is enough.

    i had been following the news on thailand in general evry once in a while... this time i really would condemn the govt of the day (whether thaksin,somchai, the 'chef' or abhisit) for taking a laid back attitude towards the violence in the south.. i wonder...how many more lives need to perish and whose before they really do something.

    we can see from examples of malaysia n singapore in their attempt to exterminate subversive groups. question is..whether its in the govt A priority list or not. obviously it isnt. PAD has been talking like hell but do they have an answer?

    if the govt do not care about the lives of their own people then who else in other part of the world whose concern can make a difference?

    after 3 years of observing the political unrest and general situation and attitude of the thai people in handling these unfortunate affairs sadly...i have come to a point where i realised my impression of thai people in general has somewhat dwindled tho i still love the country with beautiful beaches and islands.

    So guys.. when do you plan to enlist in the military and serve your country??

    The problems to catch these guys is that Thai military does want to run after them (ambush and mines an issue). But with tuff guys like you the Thai military can do that.

    Most of you seems to be favor of military solutions you should leave you PC and go down to nearest requiting boot.

    Even if the chance to get shoot are slim.. It's 90% chance that you get mental or sleeping problems.

    Kaweeka can't say that military is all the evil to create the problems in the south, after reading the news, the beheading of soldiers protecting teachers and then this one. So he's venting out his frustration by accusing Abhisit with very sensible way. If they can't accuse army, they will accuse the dems. It's Pavlov's dog's-like automatic response. So you don't have to take them sriously.

    David Patraeus, Kaweeka,
    it is very easy to make PM Abhisit guilty of what is happening in the south. It shows me your level of education.
    Do you really believe that the news in the article had never happend, if Thaksin, Samak, Somchai or any other guy had been PM?
    You all are unfair in your comments. Finally you will go even further and make PM Abhisit guilty for every road-accident since he is PM???
    I have never seen any suggestion how you guys would solve the problem in the south. Criticize PM Abhisit without making any suggestion is an act of recreance.

    I agree with you:

    It must be done quickly and with determination.
    1 Engaged in war fare or combat fighting.
    2 Aggressively active {as in a cause}

    Abhishit should go to the deep south and tell the victims of these attrocities how stability is back in Thailand.

    May be that is what he means by stability, I wouldn't put it by that lunatic.

    I agree with "Not Amused". These criminal killers are radicalized Muslims. People need to understand that they are not anything other than the lowest class of people that kill for some perverse sense of righteousness. There is nothing in the world that excuses this kind of behaviour.

    The only way to deal with people that would do something like this is to visit retribution upon them in a way that tells others not do behave in such a manner. It must be done quickly and with determination.

    I would really like to see the news media (all forms) start calling the terrorists and criminal thugs what they really are instead of trying to soften the characterazation of their acts with politically correct descriptions of the perpetrators. THEY ARE NOT INSURGENTS!! THEY ARE NOT MILITANTS!!

    Ambushing and killing innocent victums, then decapitating and inflicting other forms of body mutilizations on them is not accepted in any civilized society as an act of war, insurgency or rebellion.

    According to the definitions found in Webster's Dictionary an Insurgent is;
    1: a person who revolts against civil authority or an established government ; especially : a rebel not recognized as a belligerent
    2: one who acts contrary to the policies and decisions of one's own political party

    A "belligerent --- noun" is a person;
    1: waging war ; specifically: belonging to or recognized as a state at war and protected by and subject to the laws of war
    2: inclined to or exhibiting assertiveness, hostility, or combativeness

    mil·i·tant -
    1 : engaged in warfare or combat : fighting
    2 : aggressively active (as in a cause)
