Banks refuse to take a Friday holiday

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva insists he will not resign or dissolve the parliament as the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leaders demanded because following them would not lead to democracy.

The group's demands, especially the demand for members of the Privy Council to resign, were undemocratic and inappropriate, the prime minister said on a national television on Thursday evening.

He said dissolving the parliament when the country is in a crisis would not bring about democracy.

In addition, the premier said the cabinet agreed to make Friday an additional holiday for the long Songkran weekend, and the government will later enforce regulations to prosecute the wrongdoers.

However, the Bank of Thailand (BoT) announced that commercial banks and the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) will not close Friday, because many transactions need to be completed.

Mr Abhisit claimed that as chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the country has many responsibilities and dissolving the parliament now would disrupt everything, he continued.

Mr Abhisit said 70 per cent of the red-shirts had already returned home while the remaining 30 per cent had changed their anti-government rally scheme.

He said the UDD's demands were clearly illegitimate, because they urged people to break the law.

He asked public members to help the government monitor the situation and report potential mischievous incidents to authorities promptly.

The measures being enforced by the government would bring the situation to normal as quickly as possible, and they would not affect the majority of people, he assured.

right Enigma, Suthep is too Mafia - this is Thailand's cleanest ever civilian least mafioso-packed, cabinet with the lowest representation of Northern and North Eastern drug barons and the choice of offer is a thousand year Reich of mafia and criminals in nice red shirts and you say that you think that Suthep is a mafia figure. I'm not defending him but the choices are stark - Suthep's tainted shirts or Veera's downright filthy ones - a faint whiff of mafia corruption or an overwhelming stink of it. But if pay poor people 1,000 Baht a day and their sense of smell becomes weaker.....I assume that's what happened to 'Shame'

I have always admired the people of Thailand for being tolerable and friendly. That I think few people with different interest should not take the chances of going out to the streets.

    Which Immigration offices are closed?

I know it's too early, but maybe an Immigration person will read this and offer a knowledgable response. I MUST check in today.

Who is making these kind of opportunistic decisions in the government? Don't they have a brain? Banks need to provide people with work. Companies are already closed for a week. Why does the government refuse to take all people into account when they take counter measures. or is Abhisit hiding behind Suthep again, just like in hard talk on Wednesday on the BBC. It seems that Suthep is really in charge. That is a bad thing, Suthep is after all a bit Mafia, he is a provincial Godfather.

He should step down, to avoid further damage to the country. He and his group did too much already, hope he can really end this. Adhisit, please go home. To save our life.
