Bt60m snow house for pandas

  • Published: 4/06/2009 at 06:25 PM
  • Online news:

The Chiang Mai Zoo is constructing a 60-million-baht snow house for Xuang Xuang, Lin Hui and the panda cub, Prasertsak Boontrakulpoonthawee, chief of the panda research project said Thursday.

The new house was expected to be complete and open to the public in the middle of the month.

But the giant panda family would not be moving to the snow house as soon as it is finished, because it is not winter, he said.

Xuang Xuang would be taken to the new home first, and Lin Hui and the cub woud move in when they were strong enough.

Mr Prasertsak said the temperature inside the dome will be set at minus 5 degrees celsius.

The path to the snow house is built to resemble the Great Wall of China, he added.

60 Million Baht! You must be kidding! I thought the government was having financial problems? Thailand is BORROWING money folks! HELLO!
There are many other better things to spend money on. If the pandas need a place to live either let the Chinese pay for their new house or send them back to China.
China is in a much better finincail position to spend money on items such as a Snow House!
(I also agree with Hua Hin Dave - Pandas live in bamboo forests. Hmm, maybe another example of the educational process lost in translation!)

Panda bears dont live in snow. They live in high level bamboo forests.

Their natural environment - lower level bamboo forests - are now covered in farms so thats why they now only live higher up.

In winter they move down to warmer areas of the forests, not up.

    what next?

Perhaps a nice tropical beach environment for the Polar bears and penguins?

That should waste another 60M baht nicely.

Can you believe it? They are spending 60m baht to build a house for panda. Why not use the money to build houses for the poor? There are still many people sleeping on the streets, especially children.

And because of the Chiang Mai zoo's anti-white farang pricing discrimination we farang can claim a considerable percentage of this new Snow House.

    The zoo should thank us.

re a name for the baby panda; may I nominate 'Tiananmen'?

I posted this comment in Posttoday and would like to repeat it here.

"Lots of money being poured into this little cub!! While this development is good for tourism industry; the Zoo organization need to step back and think carefully before spending large sum of money while we still have limited time with this little cub before sending it back to China. Agree that we should take advantage of the situation but don't over react!"
