About 100 members of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) gathered at the Royal Plaza on Wednesday morning to mark the 77th anniversary of the 1932 Revolution.

The gathering was led by Somyos Pruksakasemsuk, Charan Dithapichai and Puea Thai MP Sunai Jullapongsathorn.

They lit red candles and placed red roses around three words -- democracy, freedom, equality.

The red-shirt members dispersed peacefully afterwards. But they planned to gather again at Sanam Luang in the evening.

The June 24, 1932, coup was a bloodless transition of power in which the system of government  in what was then Siam was changed from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy under a prime minister.

Oh please, the "revolution" was merely the first in a long line of coups which transferred power from one oligarchy to another.

Somehow today's republican revisionists fail to remember all the political intimidation, arrests and executions the Promoters used, particularly during Phibun's first period, in order to secure their hold on power.

And let's not forget the Nazi-inspired, anti-Chinese discrimination that was so prevalent.

Should be a national holiday, too bad it has been masked with years of propaganda and revisionism... but my experience is that more and more Thais are taking a second look at their history and digging deeper for facts.
