A latest survey reveals that many Thai people would accept a crooked government if it can make the country prosper and raise their standard of living.

The Abac Poll Research Centre conducted a survey on people's well-being, involving 1,228 households in 17 provinces nationwide.

84.5 per cent viewed that corruption in businesses would not be unusual and 51.2 per cent said they would tolerate a corrupted government if it can improve the country and their well-being.

73.9 per cent agreed that living self-sufficiently can help ease the economic crisis.

On the continuing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, 84.6 per cent wanted both sides to negotiate peacefully and jointly improve the regional economy. 4.8 per cent wanted either side to use force to solve the problem.

52.9 per cent supported the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship's anti-government rallies under the condition that they must be held peacefully.

16.3 per cent said they would support the UDD unconditionally. 21.1 per cent opposed the group.

So what is new in this survey which comes out every now and then : nothing. The point is endemic corruption eats up about 15% of GNP, prevent sensible development, keeps the mentality of 'what's in it for me' alive and increases the level of stress for a population who wants to live above their means. Unfortunately for Thailand they are at a crossroad between the USA (a credit based way of life) and most african countries (military backed up corrupted democracies). If they enjoy this situation up to them but they are bound for a rough ride ahead. If they do not like it, well, i wish them luck as they will need much more than good karma to keep their head above the sand...

"73.9 per cent agreed that living self-sufficiently can help ease the economic crisis." You must be kidding? Are these people living in a bubble? The world today is a GLOBAL ECONOMY! HELLO! Self sufficiency is just another word for protectionism and while it might have worked a few decades ago, if you don't join the parade soon, it will pass you by.
Again it's a question of education. Keep them undereducated and they will believe almost anything!

It is very sad news that showed corruption of the govenment and business had been accepted 84.5% in Thailand as long as I am wealthy too.

What is wrong with the result of the survey?
The majority of Thai people are Buddhism who should practice the basic five precepts of Buddha-Dhamma as least in their life time. They only practice the five precepts by their lip service, not by their heartedminds.
The Sangkha's community and adminitration must analize and investigate to find the failure of the present teaching of Buddh-Dhamma.

I am very sad and very disappointed to the conc lusion that THE HABITUALT BEHAVIOR OF CORRUPTION AND SELFISHNESS are in the heratedmind of Thai people. In other world, the corrupted culture is the Thai culture.
If we are mindfully looking under our skins deeply and honestly and earnestly,we will rezlize that HABITUAL CORRUPTED BEHAVIOR had been happened in Thailand for a long.long time and it has happened in every level of the people reguardless race, fame, status, rich or poor, educated or uneducated, leader or ordinary people. The Thai people have accepted HABITUAL CORRUPTED BEHAVIOR that is normal to our daily livies,If I have the opportunity I will do the same things.

If Thai people have accepted our shamful corupted habitual behavior, then we will be fearful to our actions and we have a chance to reform our wrong doing
    If Thai people are angry,arrogance,shameless
and faerless,we will put the blame to someoneelse.
Ther is no chance to reform our hehaviors.

I hope Thai leaders, educatorsand ordinary people to pratice and truly understsnd snd clearly see the basic five precepts with their heartedminds,Thai land will be in harminy peaceful and prosperity.

The truth is we can be successful,if we are honest and good ethical and moral conducts,loving-kindness and compassion,This methods have been proved over 2500 years.

    MAY,BUDDHA,DHAMMA,SANGKHA BLESS ALL THAI PEOPLE.

Government corruption is morally wrong. The acceptance of government corruption in society is morally wrong. To become morally strong, one must start in their own home and never accept, that corruption of any kind is ok.

Most Thais, are good, decent, people who don't accept corruption." From this statement I assume you have never dealt with government officals or had dealings with the police those whiter than white boys in brown. Is there any room in your ivory tower? I suggest you see a good optician about the strengh of the rose tinted glasses.

Well, can any one tell me what's so bad about corruptions in government? Why countries with the least amount of corruptions happenes to enjoy the highest standard of living and the ones with the most corruptions live in poverty, crimes, toxic environment, and etc?

If this poll in true, I think Thai people already forgave Thaksin for his alleged crimes and it's time for him to come back to PM Office. Seriously!

The article title and the first question are not coherence, different wording and meaning. "Corruption" and "Crooked" may not semantically interpret the same degree of seriousness. Also the condition IF may very well indicate that the survey is a "junk" design. If one take that serious speculation, it just shows a state of your mind.

But seriously, Chan, Thailand need no bless from your God. She is doing very well without it.
