Chavarat lashes out at MEA union

Interior Minister Chavarat Charnveerakul has lashed out at the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) labour union for threatening to cut off power to government offices which haven't paid outstanding power bills totalling over a billion baht.

Mr Chavarat linked the threat to the union's stalled demand for a 2,000-baht monthly cost of living allowance.

He said the MEA labour union first came up with the demand for the 2,000-baht allowance and later threatened to cut off power supplies to 26 government offices. Although the union denied the power cut threat had anything to do with its allowance demand, they were not being reasonable, he said.

He thought it was possible that the 26 government offices had not paid their power bills, as the union complained, but he did not know why because all government agencies were allocated an annual budget for this purpose.

However, the union should not have raised this matter as a threat at this time, he said. Despite union leaders' denials, it could not be separated from the demand for a 2,000-baht allowance.

The minister said he agreed the allowance should be paid to employees on salaries of 15,000 baht a month or less. But those earning up to 50,000 baht per month should not be entitled to it, as the union was now demanding, he said.

According to the MEA union, government agencies owe a total of 1.02 billion baht in electricity charges. For instance, the Finance Ministry has an outstanding bill of 7.5 million baht for the past three months, the PM's Office owes 16 million baht and the Defence Ministry 200 million baht.

    To John,

You obviously are on the wrong side. You don't even know what you are talking about.
Do you know that if any household in bkk is late 7 days at the end of the month in paying their bills the power company cuts off our electricity. It happens to us often..not that we want to pay late..it's because we travel oversea very often.
So it is only fair they cut off these government office power for not paying up their bills even for months. Or is there a double standard here.

What if we all forgot to pay our taxes, bet the government would have something to say about that.

It's very fiscally responsible for the union to try and collect the money owed to their employer, who obviously has done nothing. Just like the Democrats.

I say it's outrageous... that a bloody nuisance of union can't just keep its place.

Whether bills are paid or not is a management problem/decision... not for lazy unionists to decide

What an inept government it can not even pay its own bills and yet the elite wants it to govern the country WOW.
It is little wonder the North yearn for a decent government like they had under Mr Thaksin

I say "Go for it!" and turn it off. Maybe that will teach them to be a little more financially responsible. We have to pay our bills, so the Government should as well. If not, well, like an old song said: "Boom, boom, out go the lights!" lol

Stimulious checks aside, this is outragous. How can a responsible government FORGET to pay the electric bill. I guess our Oxford educated PM must have missed that class lecture on how to pay your electric bill 101.
