The Puea Thai Party will not change its leader for the time being but will wait until the parliament is dissolved and a general election called, deputy leader Plodprasop Surussawadi said on Thursday afternoon.
Mr Plodprasop said he made the announcement to end confusion, both in the party and among the voters.
The party's parliamentary leader Chalerm Yubamrung had earlier proposed Yingluck Shinawatra, younger sister of deposed and fugitive ex-premier Thaksin, to lead the main opposition party.
''I insist that there will be no change in our party leader in the near future,'' Mr Plodprasop said.
''The House session is now closed and therefore there is no urgent need to have the opposition leader in the parliament for the time being.''
Mr Plodprasop said party leader Yongyuth Wichaidith had no problem in continuing in the job even though he was not an MP.
The Democrat-led government had failed to properly tackle the economic crisis and a House dissolution could take place sooner than expected, he said. At that time, Puea Thai MPs and executives would elect a new party leader who would become prime minister. The new leader would be acceptable to both party members and voters.
He said the government should focus less on playing political games and more on settling economic issues and southern unrest.
On the border dispute with Cambodia, Mr Plodprasop said the government should not try to create further conflict with its neighbour.
