South unrest leaves 2,897 orphans

Five years of the renewed insurgency in four southern border provinces has seen thousands of children orphaned, a senior social development and human security official said on Thursday.

Suparerk Hongpakdi, director of the Office of Women and Family Affairs, said since the violence flared anew in Januafry 2004  Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala and then parts of Songkhla  a total of 2,897 children have been orphaned.

The number of orphans had increased sharply from1,425 in January 2007  to 2,897 at the end of June, showing that  the violence had intensified in the last 30 months, he said.

 Mr Suparerk said southern unrest has left 542 women widows in Pattani, 502 in Yala, 439 in Narathiwat and 69 in Songkhla.

    This is a tragedy that goes unspoken by all. Why do those in power insist it is the "restive South"?...
    it has not been that for years, let's say thousands of deaths ago. Where is the outcry?

    Very sad. Nearly 3000 orphans, lacking parental care, love and affection, that too..in a limited south Thailand. The repercussions can be anything, varying with time and age. It would be better, to have a special body to over-see these issues..
