The state authorities of United Arab Emirates confirmed that they had checked and found that the fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has not visited and stayed in Dubai, assistant to foreign affairs minister, Panich Wikitseth, said on Saturday morning.

Mr Panich said it is possible that Thaksin might use other name while traveling to UAE. Asked why didn’t the ministry invited the persons who went to visit Thaksin in Dubai to have them confirm on where about of the ex-premier, the assistant minister said it could not be done as it is not the ministry’s duty and that the people have personal right of traveling.

After the media reported that Kwanchai Praiphana, a core leader of the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), had left for UAE to visit the ex-premier in Dubai early this week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had asked for a confirmation from the UAE whether Thaksin was really in Dubai.

When you send a bureaucrat to find a billionaire, who doesn't want to be found by the bureaucrat, guess who wins?

How silly of the Foreign Dept asking Dubai if the ex PM is living there ! Listen, the ex Thai PM is holding a diplomatic passport of another country, so he has diplomatic immunities as such, which probably includes matters concerning his private movements and stays.

To dear disc:7. Thaksin says that he is the champion of the democracy because he was elected very easily by the majority of voters (most of them, certainly bought)
But, when Thaksin was Prime Minister, he rarely took part in parliamentary debates, making only 12 appearances in 6 years.
In February 2006, Thaksin was under mounting pressure from the street, after the selling of Shin Corp to Singapore (he used his position as P.M. to advantage his-family businesses, so stock share value increased considerably). Then, he decided to dissolve the parliament (although, having a strong majority of deputies in his pocket), only because he was afraid to answer stinging questions from the Opposition Democrat Party. This happened before the coup! Thasin had put the Thai democratic machine in a blind-alley! The bloodless coup of sept 2006 had only unlocked the situation. The Thaksin’s TRUE DEMOCRACY CONCEPT is only a con trick, a sucker's bet.

benkie - Thaksin is a threat but not to Thailand. He's only a threat to the military and Democrat party. With Thaksin still in the picture there is little hope of the Democrats winning a general election, even with the Army's intervention again, and at best they may cobble together a coalition even weaker than the present one.

You blame Thaksin for making the economy worse but you don't even mention the PAD, openly supported by the Democrats, who destroyed the tourist industry and pulled the rug out from under most international investors.

If you think arresting and jailing Thaksin will restore justice, I'm sorry, but you do not have a clue how the Thai "justice" system works. There has never been even a vestige of justice in Thailand even before Thaksin was ever born.

The government does not have the guts to go to the root of the problem, the military, as they are their footmen.

Thaksin and the Red-Shirt did not make the economy worse. The ongoing protest was started by the masterminds who used the yellow-shirt, PAD and the democrats to grab power from people elected government unconstitutionally. The ongoing protests are about justice, democracy and freedom. Free Thais from the military rule and protect the constitutional Monarchy. We have to protect the Constitutional Monarch because the Constitutional Monarch is also under the Constitution. It was not his will to endorse the military government set up after the 2006 military coup. It is against the will of the Constitutional Monarch to support an unconstitutional event. The double standard law enforcement and judiciary and using of retroactive law is a disgrace to the Thais.

    To RicefieldRadio :

You mentioned that the goverrnment should spend more time and effort in tackling the Thai's "worsening" economic problem. The reason why the government wants to bring Thaksin to justice is because Thaksin remains a threat to Thailand. He may not be the one who has made the economy bad; but judging from the red shirt street protest instigated by Thaksin, he definitely is the one who has made the economy "worse". So to tackle the "worsening" problem, the government will need to go right to the source and remove it once and for all. Besides, arresting Thaksin is a matter of restoring jusice.

It appears the Democrats are the only ones that really care about Thaksin';s whereabouts. It may be a better idea for them to expend their energy trying to solve the countries worsening problems rather than chase one person around like a bunch of children playing tag.
