Suthas Ngernmuen, a Democrat Party list MP, said on Sunday he felt happier with the party after receiving a telephone call from former party leader Chuan Leekpai to give him moral support.
Mr Suthas said last week he would resign from the party if Abhisit Vejjajiva conceded the Northeast Region to Bhumjaithai in the next election. This prompted Mr Abhisit to quickly say he had never thought of doing so.
The veteran politician said what he said reflected the feeling of party branches in the Northeast.
"Many party branch members came to give me moral support. Everybody is still confident Mr Abhisit and Mr Chuan are still loved by the Northeast people," he said.
Mr Suthas said as a party core in the Northeast he could say that the Democrat Party can still keep a hold of the region.
"We welcome help, but it must be made in the name of the Democrat Party only. When Mr Abhisit visits Buri Ram, I and all party branch chairmen will be on hand to receive him," he said.
Mr Suthas admitted the Democrats would still be far behind Puea Thai in the next election in the Northeast. However, he hoped to win at least 14 House seats in urban constituencies.
The Democrat Party will hold an assembly in the Northeast in October. In November, there will be a friendly football match in Roi-et. The prime minister will be invited to the region on both occasions, he said.
