Thaksin party at Sanam Luang banned

Red-shirts will not be allowed to hold a birthday party for fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra at Sanam Luang on July 26, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said on Tuesday.

Even if leaders of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship submitted a formal request to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration it would not be approved, Mr Sukhumbhand said.

"The law clearly states that Sanam Luang can  be used only for royal and state ceremonies, activities of the government and important cultural festivities," the governor said.

The BMA had never allowed any particular group to use the park for personal purposes.

"If the red-shirt group uses Sanam Luang as the venue to celebrate Thaksin's birthday, the BMA is ready to take legal action," he warned.

Mr Sukhumbhand, a member of the Democrat party, insisted he had no bias against any political group and was only performing his duty as governor.

Its a bit scary that masses of people would come out to celebrate a formerly elected leader's birthday. Its the creepy affair you'd only see in North Korea or maybe Saddam's Iraq. Can you explain to me what Thaksin or his birthday has to do with democracy, the plight of the Issan people, or fighting elitism?

It seems more like a cult than a democratic movement. It seems completely obsessed and fixated on Thaksin, his wealth, and his personal ambition than helping the Thai people. These people are wasting time they should be spending building their own businesses, educating their children, and building their lives.

Instead they throw a party for a convicted criminal? And the UDD/PTP leadership are absolutely shameless in taking these people's time and squandering it, perversely.

to celebrate the 2 'Happy birthdays' with a big big big party? Softdrinks for everyone !
On the spot grilled honey-ribs free + plenty !

    Everyone ist invited !!!

Given that the UDD is a political group and Thaksin is a political figure surely it comes down to a politically related rally?

NO mention in the governor's comments about how the many political rallies over the years at Sanam Luang have been able to go ahead if its only for govt. or Royal purposes.....simply not true I think. The ground is public place for large gatherings otherwise where else can people assemble? Surely, something "owned"(?) by the government belongs to the people?? Who employs the government? Who pays the taxes?

I think this governor was already in power when yellows were still at govt. house, shooting in the street on the way to the airports, and then at the airport. Don't remember him making any comments against the yellows and their illegal and harmful occupations. A party at Sanam Luang on the other hand is causing no harm to anyone and celebrating a leader unfairly removed from power by unconstitutional and undemocratic means.

The only duty he has performed in his time as Bangkok Governor is to not allow the opposite party hold a birthday party. What duty has he performed for the poor who live in the slums. The business supporters of the Democrat party are already disillusioned with this inept Democratic government and governor
