Korn: Economy, tourism not hit by flu

The swine flu outbreak has yet to hit the country's tourism sector and overall economy, according to Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij.

"The number of commercial airline flights in the country rose by approximately 20 per cent while hotel bookings were about 15 to 20 per cent higher during the five-day holiday," Mr Korn said on Thursday.

He said fuel usage during the holiday from Saturday to Wednesday also increased.

These indicators showed that people were not worried about the flu outbreak and it did not discourage them from travelling, the minister said.

Mr Korn said he questioned the World Health Organisation's report that Thailand had the highest number of flu fatalities in the region, because different countries had different ways of recording medical information and fatalities.

The flu outbreaks in different countries could not be compared, he said.

The Public Health Ministry confirmed three more swine flu fatalities on Thursday morning, raising the toll to 14.

09/07/2009, "FLU OUTBREAK HURTS TOURISM," Tourism and sports minister Chupolsilpa-archa.
09/07/2009,"ECONOMY,TOURISM NOT HIT BY FLU," Finance Minister Korn ( Oxford 2)

One week ago in BP: "More plain than travelers at Suvarnabhumi" (photo of all plains lined up.)
Who is supposed to give information on Tourism?

Who said:"No one will die from Swine flue in MY country,as we are very well prepared to take care of those with symptom, if not (Oxford 1 !)Should he now be held responsible for the 14 who already have died, most of them between 12 and 24 years old?
Nearly 3000 infected, with the health system in Thailand, experts predicts that the figures can be closer to 300.00 as Thailand, and under the "so named" present GOV has turned from: The land of Smile to become The land of COVER UP.
Thailand by far worse hit than China and why? The country has used COVER UP, this in favor of any serious ACTIONS.
The World will know, this as we foreigners living in this country have to send facts to our respective home countries. If we only made "Oxford 2" statements; How many of our fellow country men coming on holiday would risk to be sent home in a coffin?

It is mind boggling what Mr Korn Chatikavanij in his official capacity as Finance Minister puts into the public domain. The way he refers to statistics and his figures show that he attended the same school of thought like Mr Winston Churchill. Churchill also had a flavor for statistics and an opinion how to use them.

What I cannot believe is that Mr Korn Chatikavanij seems to think that the Thai people and foreigners will believe him, when he says that there was a 20% increase in commercial flights in Thailand and that holiday bookings had gone up by 15 to 20% during the 5 day holiday break.

The basic global facts are that all major airlines are cutting flight routes and flight numbers and that tourist figures on the global stage are declining and hotels all over the world suffering financially due to fewer customers. Thailand has been hit harder than any other country in this region because of the political problems it has been facing for some time now. Mr Korn says that is not the case and since he is Oxford educated it seems we have to believe him. Mr Korn says he does not believe the WHO, an organization that is not bias or working for a specific government, but working for the public health on a global stage. Since Mr Korn is an Oxford educated person the WHO must be wrong and it seems again that we have to believe him.

However, let us not forget that Mr Korn was a former executive with JP Morgan in Thailand and his background is the background of a banker. The global financial meltdown has been caused by bankers giving out false figures and fiddling the books and balance sheets. Since Mr Korn is a former banker I believe we should be careful to accept whatever he tells the public.

As i heard that you will have to pay 10.000 bahts to know if you have a common flu or H1/N1 flu i will stay at home.
i just get out of a severe flu like symptoms (fever, cough....) but 10.000 baht is far too expensive so thai government will have false countings for sure

Hm, "intersting" concept of math, though hardly unique to Thailand.

FM Korn, I *think* 2+2=4 (still), not, say, 3 or 5.

Got 15 bodies? well, that's 15 dead folks, whichever which way we cut it.

In the U.S., there has been controversy over the way some law enforcement agencies reports crime statistics. I guess if officers get a call to respond to a crime scene where there are 40 people who've been murdered, that still counts in the statistics reported to the FBI as "one murder" -- after all, it's "one call."

Note to the Post: How come I ALWAYS have to put in the code, click -- then have to do it at LEAST one more time? That is, unless everything goes up in smoke anyway, which sometimes happens.

Somebody must be turning accountants loose on these numbers. . . .

Yeah, these Oxford-educated Finance ministers and PMs just keep outsmarting the whole rest of us that just cannot find the tourists anymore.

Oh yeah, and of course closing bars and internet cafes will just keep on attracting more and more visitors for sure. Its a good think that Thailand has a secular government.

I've had merchant friends from Pattaya say that because of the flu Europeans are non existent. Maybe Khun Korn should talk to them and give reassurance or maybe he doesn't consider Europeans significant.
