  • Online news:

The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed the 17th A(H1N1) flu-related fatality together with 209 new infections on Sunday morning.

The latest death was a woman from Ratchaburi province. The ministry believed the 150-kilogram woman, who may have complications, could be infected while she was working at a computer game shop.

The total number of swine flu cases rose to 3,555.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said the ministry will ask cell phone service providers in the country to send SMS messages about the A(H1N1) influenza to their customers.

"There are two million Thais who have congenital diseases and they are are high risk groups. The ministry will send them the information about swine flu via letters and SMS," Dr Witthaya said.

As a physician, I know there are more than two million Thais who have congenital diseases. And would alerting people via SMS be a good strategy? Recipients would probably read it and delete it instantaneously.

Perhaps some of you may miss out the "may have complications" in this report.

If the government want to withheld the information, they will have to face the music when it get out of hand. China learn the mistake from SARS. Treat your citizen's life like you treat yours!

That means that the Thai government keeps records of all Thais with congential diseases - How else can they sent SMS and letters to that specific group?

Swine Flu cases in Thailand are being under-reported. The number of infections reported are only those diagnosed medically. Many other sufferers with mild symptoms will not present for medical treatment and therefore go unreported. In the last 2 weeks I know of several people with suspected swine flu. One friend was turned away from a hospital when it was feared he had swine flu. I have just returned to Australia from a 2 week trip to Thailand and have a mild case of swine flu picked up from Thailand. It would appear that preventing public panic, encouraging tourism and the Thai trait of saving face and never admitting a problem or accepting responsibility for anything is getting in the way of a serious public health problem

It's spin last week they reported an underweight person, an alcoholic, someone with kidney problems died from the flu. It's to deflect the flack that the flu is killing people off by saying it only kills sick people off. Next week it will be 5 more Thai dies of the flu but they were short.

    @ Edward:

I agree: If the woman's weight was mentioned because her overweight probably was an underlying reason then that should be stated.

I remember that when a 30 (?) year old soldier died of A(H1N1), some ten days ago in Chon Buri, his obesity was called a possible underlying risk.

What on earth does the poor woman's weight have to do with it and why is it relevat to publish in the very short notice this piece of news is? If it is done to hint that overweight probably was an underlying reason then that should be stated. Poor reporting... with a serious issue as the 2009 flu, it is vital with accurate and detailed information!
