Suvarnabhumi crackdown next week

A major crackdown on illegal taxis and unlicensed guides will be conducted at Suvarnabhumi airport starting July 28, according to a notice put up by the Airports of Thailand Plc in the airport on Wednesday.

The crackdown will be jointly carried out by AoT, which is the airport operator.

It is enlisting the Land Transport Department and Special Operations Division, provincial police from Samut Prakan and tourist police to help.

The move came after Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum made an inspection trip to the airport and ordered the AoT to step up measures to prevent extortion gangs preying on foreign air passengers.

Mr Sohpon managed to avoid any comment on worldwide reports of an organised gang operating from duty-free shops, whose members have reportedly cheated tens of thousands of baht from foreign tourists.

The reports claim that the gangs, apparently operating in collusion with shop employees and rogue policemen, intimidate and browbeat accused foreign shoplifters and thieves into paying large "fines" in order to escape lengthy incarceration and trial and return to their own countries.

At least one European country has warned its citizens not to shop in the duty-free area of Suvarnabhumi at all, and the alleged cheating has been featured in reports by the BBC, among others.

The duty-free scams are in addition to the longtime Bangkok airport problems of so-called "black-licence taxis" which have no authorisation to carry passengers, and airport touts who try to steer naive arriving tourists to unwanted hotels and shady businesses.

In 25 years and 100's of visits the worst thing that has happened to me was having to grease a policeman's palm with 500 baht for making an illegal.. if accidental turn on my way to the airport. If I have time to spare I would have gone and paid the likely 300 baht fine.

I have never had anything stolen in all this time... although I have seem slit handbags etc years ago.

If anyone really tried to stop me for shoplifting I would yell ery loudly at them which would simple tell them quietly to FO and walk away.

I passed through Swampy Airport last month without a single item of luggage/carryon on a flight up from Singapore. Swampy Customs Staff looked glaringly at me as they missed the opportunity to shake down a white farang since I had zero luggage or carryon to hassle. As usual, the taxi touts/guides were in full bloom. This has gone on for the last 25 years of my time in Thailand and is part of the Culture. I have many middle class Thai friends who have told me "don't touch or shop any of the Duty Free Shops" at Swampy for fear of farang false arrest. This scam seems well know to Thai people going in or out of Swampy and I do appreciate decent Thais for so advising. Too bad it was not until the BBC broke the story that it was released internationally.

DOZ dont you realise people use this forum because they love Thailand and are frustrated to hell by the highly organised corruption that appears to be supported by the state/govt/police?

You are right there is crime everywhere but none so well orchestrated as in LoS. Thais have accepted this for years, Farangs do not. We mostly enjoy freedom of speech and can vote for our governments it is called democracy something that is still a novel concept and much misunderstood in Thailand.

Come to USA or UK you will see a much fairer and just system, it is not perfect. And lastly note that we all have to work here to survive, I wish I could sit on my a**e and get 'astronomical benefits'...........dream on (fan dee khrab!)

I was once quoted a duty of 20,000 baht which equated to over 70% of the value of some used household items as I was clearing into Bangkok airport. When I questioned the customs official as to applicable duty rates, he quickly reduced the duty to 500 Baht, pocketed the money and I was allowed through.

I went straight to the airport customs office and inquired as to duty rates. I was told that duty were was "up to the customs official". Very convenient, it's as if the Thai Customs officials have been given the license to steal.

Thailand is not concerned with "cleaning up it's act". I caution anyone traveling to Thailand. After living in thailand for over 15 years, I can say that you'll be cheated or conned for sure. The only question is how much...

It is so disappointing that a major International Airport has such a chaotic reputation. Are the management really so incompetent as to not realise the knock on effects on the country's economy? When I am next at Swampy, I will have a taxi prebooked and be avoiding the duty free shops at all costs.

Can anyone here please explain how could the police crackdown on illegal taxis and unlicensed guides at airport when they the police’s had already announced the date they are going to. Will the illegal taxis and unlicensed guides are so stupid to be there on that day to let the police crack on them?

Well, the reason here is sample. As everyone here knew that the illegal taxis and unlicensed guides had already paid the police for operating at the airport. So it is the police duty to inform them whenever the police are going to carry out a crackdown on them. By announcing the date is to inform them not to be at the airport on that particular date instead of call them directly as this no one have any evident that the police are involved with those illegal taxis and unlicensed guides.

For years, my foreign friends have been visiting this land of smiles either for long vacation or short holidays.

We have heard more good feedback than bad ones.

But the most common and recent one is:
"Bangkok is no longer what it used to be............"

Friends complaint about cheating, over-priced, rudeness, and etc.

Is this the beginning of a very dark tunnel.........
