More than 10,000 members of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) gathered at Sanam Luang on Monday morning hours before they submit a petition seeking a royal pardon for ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Some of the red-shirts arrived at the venue early Monday and spent the night there.

Thaksin was scheduled to make a phone-in address to his supporters at 11am.

Security around Sanam Luang was tight.

Bangkok police chief Pol Lt Gen Worapong Chiewpreecha said that about 1,500 riot police were ready to maintain order if the red-shirts clash with the blue-shirts, who support Newin Chidchob.

The Supreme Court would hand down its ruling on the controversial rubber sapling procurement project involving Mr Newin and 43 others on MOnday.

Acting police chief Wichien Pojphosri said he has not been informed of any third parties which were expected to use the situation to stir unrest.

It doesn't matter if a million turn up; there's no credibility where most are paid 500 baht, a free trip to Bangkok from the provinces. The same comments apply to the Yellow, Blue, Pink or whatever rainbow of colours happens to congregate for whatever cause. So long as the army continues stirring the pot, nothing will improve.
