18 years in jail for 'Da Torpedo'

The Criminal Court on Friday sentenced Daranee Chanchoengsilpakul, alias Da Torpedo, to 18 years imprisonment for lese majeste.

The court ruled that Ms Daranee, a United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship member, made several remarks deemed to be lese majeste in speeches on the stage at UDD rallies at Sanam Luang on Jan 18, June 7 and June 13 last year.

She was convicted on three counts of insulting the King and Queen and given a six-year sentence on each count. The court did not allow her a suspension of the jail term.

"The court finds she intended to insult and make threats to Their Majesties the King and Queen," one of the three judges said, reading the verdict.

After hearing the verdict, Ms Daranee, who was wearing a prison uniform and a surgical face mask, made a V sign with her hand to about 30 UDD supporters who turned up at the court in a show of support.

"It is what I expected to happen," she told reporters after the verdict. "I will appeal."

Prior to the hearing, Ms Daranee said her speeches were not aimed at the monarchy.

Her comments were aimed at the generals who ousted Thaksin Shinawatra, she said.

This will also be my last post due to BP being selective and bias toward only Thai opinion which is more often personal attack than substantive criticisim in ther posts.

Most systems in this country work on power and money. If you have those things you can make the system work to your advantage.
Global influence will bring change no matter how long you try and resist.
This is my last posting here due to lack of freedom of expression.
I love this country, but my comments have been rejected (or maybe lost) too many times to continue.
    Good luck!

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the transcripts of Da's speeches? I would like to know exactly what it was she said insulting the royalty that got her an 18 year sentence. Must have been pretty nasty to get 18 years.

Clearly there are some people here who need to go and live in Burma and they will quickly see why the foreigners choose to be here. There is a huge sign in Mandalay telling the local people (albeit in English only), that all foreigners are scum and not to be trusted. So the paranoid government isnt exactly welcoming.

But the one group of foreigners that are there are ASEAN businessmen which is the one reason you will never get ASEAN to deal with Burma the way that it should dealt with. They are not all missionaries, although Yangon is awash with christian churches.

Boy Andrew, I hope the first thing Westerners do is help people like you with composition. You're very amusing. As the Western system collapses you claim Thailand needs to go in that direction?

Trillion dollar ponzi schemes? Profiteering wars? Contrived carbon taxes? Crony capitalism? Are you aware of the fact that in both the UK and US human rights are being rolled back, common law and the Bill of Rights are being piecemeal repelled? Did you know that despite the Irish voting down the Lisbon Treaty, the EU insists it will keep pushing it until they accept it?

I'm sorry that sounds like Thailand's corruption on a much bigger, tyrannical scale, scientifically and industrially executed. No thanks buddy. Don't hold your breath waiting for Thais to accept this, while even now westerners are rejecting this.

Da Torpedo, UDD, PTP are all sell outs. They work directly for the globalists in the spirit the traitors of the 1932 coup did. It failed ultimately, to purge Thailand of its culture and heritage and role in a new right-wing fascist system of eliminating the middle class and turning the whole country into the Philippines.

If they have their way, Thaksin would be president for life, his right-hand men would be CIA agents like the scummy president of the Philippines, polls would be plagued with more violence and stupidity than what already exists, and foreign businessmen, the clowns helping Thaksin would have free reign.

People aren't stupid, they know this. Thaksin has a big mouth and blurts this out almost every chance he gets. The UDD rhetoric, if you actually speak and read Thai is pretty clear this is their mission.

Most of you are absolute amateurs when it comes to geopolitics - please dust off your 3rd grade social studies books and start over.

    What Constitutes a "Threat?"

According to this law -- 18 USC Sec. 871 -- which reads, in part:

"...Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

That covers a lot of deeds and statements. It gives the Secret Service a lot of latitude when conducting an investigation. There is a very good reason for this. Few jobs are more dangerous than President of the United States.

Marissa....Having a system is ok but the law behind the system can be wrong....In this case the law IS wrong considering what happens to a Australian being murdered in Thailand and the two people responsible were let off because lack of evidence... please dont speak to me about the credibility of the Thai system because as far as I am concerned the more Western people can do to change it the better....Like Andrew said it will change even if you like or not because developed countries westernise developing countries...take a look at Japan.

...no body owns thailand....But foreigners have a huge financial interest in this country and the world community will develop the country and it will change regardless...
The problem the way I see it, is Thailand has never been colonised but as more and more foreigners invest in Thailand we start to see it develop...The country has already changed Marissa and will continue to change as the western world moves in and takes Thailand in the direction it needs to go....at that system will also eventually be part of that change like every colonisedand eveloped country i the world.
