The Democrat Party said on Friday the original email message containing the altered audio clip featuring Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's voice was sent from a computer at SC Asset, a subsidiary of the Shin Corporation of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Buranat Samutharak, the party spokesman, said the email had been traced and was sent through the company's email system.

The edited voice recording was then passed on to the information technology and public relations office of the opposition Puea Thai Party before being distributed to about 30 news reporters.

The spokesman said this explained why Puea Thai MPs tried to get the clip played during yesterday's meeting of the House of Representatives, which was debating the 2010 Budget Bill.

Atthawit Suwanpaksi, the Democrat deputy spokesman, said forwarding false information is a violation of Article 94 of the Political Party Act and this could lead to a party dissolution.

The Democrat Party will meeting to decide on future action, he said.

The clip purports to be a recording of Mr Abhisit ordering  the use of harsh measures against red-shirt rioters in April.

Mr Abhisit  vehemntly denies ever issuing such an instruction.

    Ricefield,

You say that you find it suspect that anyone would send an e-mail from their place of employment that would blow up on them. Happens all the time. Take a look at any of the IT security trade magazines.

The sophistication of digital forensics today is such that an experienced specialist can trace to the original computer the document was sent from. Not the building, not the company, but the exact computer. From there the analyst can pull out all sorts of info on when and how the file was created and by who. Any firm that deals with finances, including SC Asset, is required to have in place as part of their due diligence an ISO standard IT certification process that includes monitoring of computers and security controls.

Given the seriousness of the accusations, instead of a series of he-said, she-said accusations and denials, the Thai government should hire an an experienced, un-biased, outside computer forensics firm to undertake an investigation. All major accounting and consulting firms have specialists in e-discovery that do this type of work on a daily basis. From there, the results should be made public.

I tend to believe the PM on this one, but regardless of who I believe, there is a fairly simple scientific process to decide who is telling the truth.

I find it very suspect that anyone would send an email from their place of employment that could blow up on them, but then some people are stupid when it comes to things like that.

You can easily mask any Internet IP you want now a days or even become someone else, you can also mask an email address. Why not send it from an Internet cafe?

There is the very real possibility that "the third hand" hacked the email system and sent the original email. It sure isn't out of the realm of possibility and isn't that hard to do if you look at all the spam emails you get from legitimate websites.

Maybe it was an inside job by a Democrat supporter who used one of the company computers, there are so many possibilities that once you point the finger in this eventually it will be pointing back at you.

he result is so fast from the government it makes you wonder to what extent they are tracking us, doesn't it.

I hope that the coward who is responsible for that dirty trick be caught and sent to jail. Also that all precautions are taken so that he/she does not run away to join the 'fugitive gang'.

Email sent from SC does not necessarily a proof that it is the work of an ex-premier or some politicians that democrats wish to accuse. A full impartial investigation should be carried up.

Judging from what democrats tactics of gaining power through backdoor, the ball is still on democrats to engage all impartial sectors in society to proof that it is not their dirty work. An international expert outside of Thailand would be a fair suggestion.

A neutral probe of this issue is essential if the PM wants to regain at least part of his credibility.

After all that has happened in the past 3 years, confidence in any politician has run very low and - although the "Democrat Party" may well be right - few will blindly accept his statement that this clip is not 100% authentic.

Should the "Democrat Party" refuse a neutral probe, he would bring suspicion on himself.

I hope they have some prove to back this up! Not cheering for either side on this subject but its a big call to say this without any evidence!
