Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Wednesday he would rush work on a plan to overhaul the State Railway of Thailand soon after the Asean summit.

He said the Transport Ministry had asked for three weeks to study the matter, but he wanted action taken as soon as possible.

"After the Asean summit, I will ask for action to be taken sooner than three weeks.  We will also look into possible investment to expand the rail network," Mr Abhisit said.

The prime minister declined to say whether there were any other people behind the rail strike.  He said only that it was now necessary to ensure a quick resumption of train services and restructure the organisation.

Thai1932 I agree with your first paragraph although to blame lack of planning on this government is going a bit far... Thaksin and many previous PM's had ample opportunities to make changes and decided to not venture into the SRT union territory. With an economy falling apart due to the global recession and previous PM's Samak, spending his time thinking about cooking shows and Somchai only interested in his ego and finding a way to bring back his brother in law - Despot dictator Thaksin, there have been more important problems to fix first. Now that the SRT Unions have shot themselves in the foot and attention is on SRT overhauls we should be helping the government make a better train service to all of Thailand and get rid of these unionists who try to hold the country ransom.

To leave passengers on their own and walking away from their job by the Train Engineers, with out informing them, was irresponsible and disgusting. However, the incident has brought attention to the Nation regarding their causes, overworked operators, inadequate train maintenance, unsafe track condition, and under staff operation.

The RUSH of Mr. Abhisit to fix this failed SRT is showing his " Managing by Day to Day Crisis " approach.

Lack of proper planning by Mr. Abhisit's Government would lead the Nation to NOWHERE.

PM Abhisit, please go right ahead and quickly to restructure and modernize all rail services from top to bottom, inclding both city and country services.

Horrendous daily traffic jams are causing massive loss of production and massive health problems in both Bangkok and Chiang Mai. The only answer is underground electric, so that people can get to work / get home quickly.

The current rail service is a total disgrace to Thailand, it should have been modernized 30 years ago.

Let's please have modern and fast trains to all the main outlying capitals.

In the restructure please throw all jobs open and select new and highly capable people, and please use this as an example of recruitment, selection and promotion by capabability and past high performance and nothing else.

All Thais can see that promotion by seniority is pulling Thailand down fast. Let's see some progressive change, please.
